April 13, 2007: Sony has released a new slimline digicam with a huge 2GB internal memory and a range of features previously unavailable in Cyber-shot cameras. The Cyber-shot DSC-G1 is a 6-megapixel point-and-shoot model with a stylish aluminium body that boasts a dual-use design. Slide the built-in cover to reveal the 3x optical zoom lens when you wish to take pictures, then close the cover for photo viewing, using the 3.5-inch Xtra-Fine LCD screen. The internal memory can store up to 600 full-resolution photos and users can add up to 8GB via the Memory Stick Pro expansion slot. A key feature of the DSC-G1 is automatic image management, which catalogues pictures as they are shot. The included Album Editor software allows you to search photos by colour, face or similarity to another image. You can also search by up to 50 preset labels and combine search methods. A new graphic user interface (GUI) makes it easy to locate and adjust camera settings and an on-screen function guide display provides simple instructions for using each function. A built-in slideshow function lets users combine images and make slide shows quickly and easily. Five transition effects are provided in the camera, along with a selection of music tracks. Users can download MP3 music clips for background music to personalise their slideshows. The DSC-G1 also has built-in wireless capability that allows users to share pictures instantly with two linked compatible cameras and transmit photos wirelessly to DLNA-compatible computers. VGA video clips can be recorded in MPEGMovie4TV format at 30 frames/second. Up to 7500 images at VGA resolution can be stored in the internal memory. The DSC-G1 goes on sale this month at an RRP of $999. Other Sony digicams that were announced in January and February will also be appearing in Australian stores in coming weeks. On sale now are the 8.1-megapixel DSC-T100 (RRP $749) and DSC-T20 (RRP $599), 7.2-megapixel DSC-W55 (RRP $449), DSC-W35 (RRP $399) and DSC-S700 (RRP $299). Models that will be released this month include the 8.1-megapixel DSC-W90 (RRP $599) and DSC-W80 (RRP $549).
