April 1, 2005: JVC has released details of a new 3 CCD digital camcorder that captures still images at 5-megapixel resolution and records still and video images to a miniaturised hard disk drive.
The new Everio GZ-MC500, which will be available next month for an RRP of $2,799, can record 60 minutes of DVD- quality video or thousands of photo-quality stills to a 4GB Microdrive removable hard disk. The new camcorder uses three CCDs, each with a capture resolution of 1.23 million effective pixels, to record separate channels for red, green and blue. The resulting signals are combined using advanced pixel shift technology to produce 5 megapixel-class digital stills with a maximum size of 2560 x 1920 pixels. The same technology ensures a wider than normal dynamic range when recording still or moving images. Advanced prism optics and three-dimensional angle mounting technology guarantees high precision prism/CCD registration with accuracy on the order of one micron.
The GZ-MC500 sports a high-resolution 10x optical zoom (8x for stills) JVC lens and can shoot native 4:3 or 16:9 (squeeze) video. A manual focus ring on the lens gives precise focus control and a large Mode dial lets users access P, A, S and M shooting modes along with settings for Twilight, Sports, Snow and Portrait modes. Other features include AE bracketing, backlight and spotlight compensation and a real-time histogram display. A rotating grip allows users to shoot from many different angles.
Supplied with the GZ-MC500 is a 4GB Microdrive card, which can hold up to 60 minutes of top-quality video or 1800 stills images at the highest resolution. The camera will also accept CF Type 2 memory cards and has an additional SD card slot for storing still images or short video clips. A USB 2.0 interface is provided so files can be quickly downloaded to a Windows PC. JVC’s bundled CyberLink DVD Solution software includes three applications for creating, editing and viewing DVD movies. For full details, go to www.jvc-australia.com.
