March 18, 2005: JVC Australia has just added four new single-chip MiniDV camcorders to its line-up and will introduce a new 3CCD MiniDV camera with professional video and 5 megapixel performance in May.
The latest entry-level D-series camcorders are 30% smaller than previous models. They also feature new generation data batteries that allow access to important information at the touch of a button – even when the camera is turned off. The GR-D250 (RRP $799) and GR-DV290 (RRP $999) models each have 1/6-inch 800,000 pixel CCD imagers that deliver 520 lines of resolution. Both models are fitted with 2.5-inch colour LCD screens and colour viewfinders and both sport a 25x optical zoom lens and support up to 800x digital zoom enlargement. They also come with a 16:9 widescreen mode that allows full-size playback of video clips on widescreen TV sets. Other features include 3D noise reduction, webcam capability and Digital Colour NightScope for shooting in environments with minimal illumination. The GR-DV290 allows still images to be recorded on an SD card and comes with new Live Slow technology, which lets users record slow motion images and play them back with real-time sound.
The new GR-DF430 (RRP $899) and GR-DF470 (RRP $1099) models combine high picture quality, excellent low-light performance with low-cut styling that makes for a comfortable grip. Both models come with 15x optical zoom with up to 700x digital zoom and both feature JVC’s Low Light Plus picture improvement technology which includes an f1.2 super bright lens and 3D Noise Reduction. Digital Colour NightScope and an Auto Illumination Light extend low light shooting capabilities. They also support i.LINK input/output and have an analogue input. The GR-DF470 also supports USB Video Class, and is supplied with computer software for image capture and quick file transfer. It also includes JVC’s Live Slow and Biphonic 3D Sound technologies.

The new JVC GR-X5 features separate CCD sensors for red, green and blue to produce vivid images with true-to-life colour along with JVC’s proprietary Megabrid imaging engine that separately optimises image quality for video and digital stills. Featuring a radical new body design that is comfortable to hold and use, the GR-X5 also includes advanced pixel shift technology to deliver 5 megapixel-class stills. This claim is made on the basis that 691,200 effective pixels are used for each RGB video colour, producing images with 2560 x 1920 pixel resolution.
Smaller than most 3-CCD camcorders, the GR-X5 is palm-sized, yet large enough to be held securely, with key controls within easy reach. The LCD monitor is at the rear of the camcorder, where it can be opened and viewed in the “down” position directly behind the camera body, or flipped up above the camera and swivelled around to both the left and right. A combined Manual Focus, Exposure and Program AE Dial provides direct access to key adjustments. An auto flash is fitted for still shooting in low light and still pictures can be recorded to SD cards. Pricing has still to be determined.
