Available in red, blue or silver, Sony’s DSC-P100 sports a 5-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar 3x zoom lens. Full auto Program AE and manual settings accompany nine pre-set scene modes. Flash levels are adjustable in P, M and scene modes and exposure compensation of +/- 2 EV in 0.3 EV steps is provided. A live histogram display is available but exposure adjustments can only be made in the P and scene modes. The P100 can capture VGA video at 16 or 30fps but 30fps clips can only be recorded on Memory Stick Pro cards, and a 256MB card holds just under three minutes.
The test camera powered up and shut down almost instantaneously, and images were processed and stored in a second or two. Capture lag averaged 0.5 seconds, reducing to 0.15 seconds with pre-focusing. The slower burst mode captured shots at 0.9 second intervals with bursts ranging from 9 to 100 shots. The multi-burst mode recorded 16 images in 0.4 second intervals. Image quality was generally good, although contrast and saturation levels were elevated. The flash barely covered an average room and close-up capabilities were limited. White balance performance was average.
Strengths
- Small, well-built body and high-quality lens
- Fast start-up and shut down
- Above average picture quality
- Remote control supplied.
Weaknesses
- Limited close-up capabilities
- Only two aperture settings
- Inadequate memory card supplied [BG05]
