Olympus Camedia C-70 Zoom

In summary
With its smart, ‘titanium’ coloured metal body, 7.1-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens and pop-up flash, the Olympus Camedia C-70 Zoom is an attractive package. It’s small enough to slip in a coat pocket and the large (2.0-inch) ‘sunshine’ LCD screen provides a sharp view that is easier to use in bright conditions than standard LCDs. P, A, S and M shooting modes are supported, along with five scene programs and VGA or QVGA video recording at 30 frames per second, plus voice recording. The 5x optical zoom lens can focus to 2cm in macro mode and up to 6x digital zooming is provided. Playback options are very comprehensive. . . [more]

On test, the C-70 produced sharp pictures with accurate, natural-looking colours and excellent detail, although exposures were biased to favour shadows over highlights. We found no excessive sharpening and no coloured fringing. Long exposures were colour accurate with low noise levels, even at ISO 400. The auto white balance performed poorly with incandescent lighting but otherwise delivered excellent colour accuracy, particularly with the ‘one-touch’ setting. Capture lag averaged 0.5 seconds, reducing to 0.2 seconds when shots were pre-focused. The ‘high-speed’ burst mode records two shots at 0.4 second intervals.
Strengths
- Excellent colour reproduction
- Live histogram displays over- and under-exposed areas
- LCD monitor usable in outdoor lighting
Weaknesses
- Auto white balance unsatisfactory in incandescent light
- Highlights can be lost in bright conditions [BG05]
