Full specifications, release dates and pricing for Fujifilm’s first medium-format digital camera, the GFX 50S, were announced at special events around the world on 19 January.

Photo Review attended the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regional briefing in Kyoto, Japan, where the new camera’s details were revealed. Unfortunately, we were unable to take any pictures with the GFX 50S so we’re confined to reporting on the main technical features of the camera. A detailed specifications list can be found at the end of this report.

As revealed at Photokina last September, the mirrorless Fujifilm GFX 50S features a new Fujifilm G Format 43.8 x 32.9 mm CMOS sensor with 51.4 megapixels. We asked a company spokesperson at the media briefing why Fujifilm hadn’t opted for an X-Trans sensor and were told that it wouldn’t have been able to handle the required data transfer speeds, although it was quite possible X-Trans sensors could be used in future models. Covering 1.7x the area of full frame sensors, the sensor in the GFX 50S provides enhanced resolution and sensitivity due to the larger size of each individual pixel.
The X Processor Pro image processing engine is the same processor as used in the X Series double flagship models X-Pro2 and X-T2, enabling the GFX 50S to support Fujifilm’s acclaimed Film Simulation modes for both stills and in the Movie function, which supports Full HD recording at 30p. Weighing approximately 1230 grams when paired with a standard lens (GF 63mm f/2.8 R WR the GFX 50S t is approximately 60% of the weight of a medium format DSLR camera equipped with the same size sensor and roughly the same weight as a professional ‘full frame’ DSLR. The new camera’s magnesium alloy body is similar in size to a pro DSLR camera.
Key features of the new camera include a detachable electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 3,690,000 dots and a three-directional tilting, 3.2-inch, 2.36M-dot touch panel monitor. An optional EVF-TL1 EVF tilt adapter enables the angle of the EVF to be changed to a maximum of 90 ° when shooting horizontal landscapes and +/-45 ° when shooting in the portrait position. The focal plane shutter has been newly developed specifically for the new camera and offers a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 seconds (1/16000 seconds when using the electronic shutter), a flash synchronisation speed of 1/125 seconds or less, and high performance and durability with a cycle rating of up to 150,000 shots. Photographers can choose between an electronic front curtain shutter and a complete electronic shutter, both with negligible shutter shock.
Three lenses will be offered with the GFX 50S, when it is released in late February 2017: the GF 63mm f/2.8 R WR standard lens (RRP AU$2399), the GF 32-64mm f/4 R LM WR standard zoom lens (RRP AU$3499) and the GF 120mm f/4 R LM OIS WR Macro lens (RRP AU$4199). The GFX 50S camera body will be priced at AU$9999. For more information visit www.fujifilm.com.au.
