August 30, 2007: The new Xacti VPC-CA65EXW, which was launched today by Sanyo Australia, is claimed as the world’s first waterproof digital movie camera.
Selling for an RRP of $699, the VPC-CA65EXW combines 6-megapixel resolution for still shots with a 5x optical zoom lens and 12x digital zoom. A 2.5-inch 150,000 pixel LCD is provided for framing and reviewing shots. The camera has a built-in, multi-mode flash with a range of 10-170 cm (wide) or 80-130 cm (tele). Measuring 70.4 x 111.4 x 40.5 mm, it weighs 217 grams and is powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery.
Close focusing is supported to 1 cm when the lens is set to wide angle. A digital image stabiliser provides correction of camera shake for both still and movie shooting modes and still pictures can be recorded simultaneously with video clips. Video is recorded in MPEG-4 format with AVC/H.264 compression, for smaller and easier-to-handle file sizes. VGA quality is supported at 30 or 15 fps. A digital stereo recording and noise reduction function ensures high quality sound recordings.
The VPC-CA65EXW is waterproof to a depth of 1.5 metres, making it ideal for water-based sports including surfing, snorkelling, kayaking and canyoning as well as general boating enthusiasts. The optional VCP-S01FEX floating strap (RRP $69.95), which can be attached to the camera to prevent it sinking if dropped in water, is also available. Sanyo’s VPC-CA65 will be available from selected stores in September 2007. Visit www.sanyo.com.au for more information.
