Fujifilm has unveiled its X-T5 camera, which features the same 40.2-megapixel sensor and processor as the X-H2, along with 5-axis sensor-shift shake correction and pixel shift.

The new camera retains the classic body design of the X-T series but shares many features with the flagship X-H2 camera, including its fifth-generation backside-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor and X-Processor 5 image processing engine, offering the highest resolution – 40.2-megapixels – in the X-T series.  Like its precursors, the X-T5 will be available in silver and black versions. Significantly smaller and lighter than the X-H2, its body is also smaller and lighter than the X-T4.  Like those cameras, it comes with 5-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), offering up to seven stops of shake correction. This has enabled a new Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode that uses the IBIS mechanism to shift the sensor at high precision while capturing 20 frames within a single click of the shutter. These frames can be composited with Fujifilm’s Pixel Shift Combiner software to generate an image containing approx. 160 million pixels.

The X-T5 comes with support for the HEIF image format – in addition to the regular (8-bit) JPEG and compressed, losslessly compressed and uncompressed RAF.RAW formats – enabling users to record 10-bit image quality in files up to 30% smaller than JPEGs. Panorama images can be recorded in horizontal and vertical orientations, with a maximum resolution of 9600 x 2160 pixels.  The base sensitivity is ISO 125, with a native range up to ISO 12800 in 1/3EV steps plus extensions to ISO 64, ISO 80, ISO 100 below the base plus ISO 25600 and ISO 51200 above the top native setting.

Autofocusing has also been improved with Subject Detection AF now capable of detecting animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, planes and trains as well as the standard human face and eye detection. Other features include AI-based high-precision auto white balance and a new Smooth Skin Effect.  The top video resolution is 6.2K and movies can be recorded internally at up to 30p in 4:2:2 10-bit colour. A 4K HQ mode is available, using 6.2K over-sampling to produce high quality video. The X-T5 supports F-Log2, which records an expanded dynamic range of 13+ stops and is wider than the current F-Log, increasing post-production potential.

Dual slots are provided for SD cards and the X-T5 accepts both UHS-I and UHS-II cards and is compatible with the V90 video speed class.  The EVF has the same resolution as the X-T4’s but a slightly higher eye relief and magnification. It also offers better suppression of parallax and distortion. The three-way tilting LCD touch-screen monitor has a resolution of 1.84 million dots, the highest of the three cameras. The X-T5 uses the same NP-W235 lithium-ion battery as the X-T4 and X-H2 and has the same CIPA rating for stills shooting but it supports longer recording times (80-90 minutes vs 70 minutes for 8K) than the X-H2 due to the lower video resolution in the new camera. The table below lets you compare the X-T5 with the X-H2 and the X-T4 model it replaces.

Released concurrently with the X-T5 is the MHG-XT5, a new handgrip that significantly improves the user’s ability to hand-hold the camera when a fast, large-aperture lens is mounted. This optional accessory is designed specifically for the X-T5 and has a base that can be used as a plate compatible with the Arca-Swiss quick release system. It doesn’t need to be removed to change a battery or SD card.

The X-T5 will be released later this month at an RRP of AU$3199 for the body alone, $3949 for the body plus XF18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS kit lens or $4099 for the body plus the XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR lens.
