April 11, 2005: Nikon’s 7-megapixel Coolpix 7900 and 5-megapixel Coolpix 5900 digital cameras are now available in Australia.
Featuring 3x optical zoom Nikkor lenses and large 2-inch amorphous silicon TFT LCD monitors, the new models include facilities that make it easier for anyone to take good digital photographs. These include 16 Scene pre-sets (including a new underwater mode to complement the optional WP-CP4 waterproof housing). Four of these modes include Nikon’s Scene Assist function that aids shot composition. The portrait mode can be used with the new Face-priority AF function, which automatically senses the presence of a human face in the frame and focuses on it. Other innovative settings include Nikon’s new D-Lighting function, which automatically boost brightness in shadowed areas in shots without boosting highlights and In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, which detects and corrects red-eyes in flash shots. There’s also a handy Blur Warning that alerts users to potential camera shake situations.
Both cameras come with Nikon’s Best Shot Selector (BSS) function, which selects the best shot from a series captured with a single press of the shutter release. Both also feature reduced power consumption, allowing users to take more than 200 from a single battery change. They can also record movie clips with sound at VGA resolution with a frame rate of 30 fps. The Coolpix 7900 (RRP $799) is available in black and silver, while the Coolpix 5900 (RRP $599) comes in dark blue and silver.
