November 18, 2004: Nikon’s 8-megapixel Coolpix 8800 digital camera is now on sale in retail stores for an RRP of $1899.
Featuring a 10x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens with the first Vibration Reduction (VR) System in the Coolpix range, the Coolpix 8800 is designed for serious photographers. The VR System automatically detects and compensates for the small camera movements that cause image blur, allowing users to shoot at slower shutter speeds without risking camera shake. Two VR modes are supported – Normal Mode, which suits standard handheld shooting and Active Mode, which provides a smoother view in shaky conditions, such as shooting from a moving vehicle or on the water.

The camera offers four exposure modes – Programmed Auto, Shutter-Priority Auto, Aperture-Priority Auto and Manual – plus 15 versatile Scene settings. Other inclusions are BSS (Best Shot Selector), AE-BSS (Auto Exposure-Best Shot Selector) mode, Noise Reduction mode, Saturation Control and White Balance Bracketing. A 5-shot buffer supports continuous shooting at fast frame rates. The Coolpix 8800 also captures VGA movies with sound and has a Time-Lapse Movie Mode for recording action sequences.
A large, Vari-angle LCD monitor is coupled with a high-resolution EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) and the camera is built for durability and portability. The new D-Lighting feature in Playback mode compensates for any underexposed areas while maintaining the properly exposed area. In-camera red-eye reduction is also provided, along with framing guides on the LCD monitor, a real-time histogram display and a new JPEG EXTRA mode that offers close-to-lossless compression. RAW capture is also supported. The camera is compatible with a host of optional accessories, including a wide-angle attachment, as well as telephoto and fisheye converters. It is also compatible with a battery pack and a lens hood. In addition, the Coolpix 8800’s accessory shoe enables TTL flash operation using the Nikon SB-800 or SB-600.
