February 18, 2005: Canon has unveiled a new enthusiast DSLR camera, the EOS 350D, which features an 8-megapixel CMOS sensor and DiG!C II image processing.
A successor to the acclaimed EOS 300D model, the new camera measures 126.5 x 94.2 x 64 mm and its body weight is approximately 485 grams, making it smaller and lighter than the 300D. The new model also has a redesigned control system that is even easier to use. The Canon-developed sensor has a lens multiplier factor of 1.6x, making it similar to the sensor in the EOS 20D model and high-resolution images can be recorded with 3456 x 2304 pixels in RAW or JPEG format.
The EOS 350D’s Command Dial is structured like that of the 300D with seven Basic Zone and five Creative Zone settings. Advanced E-TTL II flash metering ensures well-balanced exposures with the built-in and accessory flash units and, unlike the 300D, flash output is adjustable. The new model also sports and easy-to-view 1.8-inch LCD monitor plus an adjustable viewfinder (-3 to +1 dpt) that covers 95% of the frame for accurate shot composition. A full range of user-adjustable controls is provided, covering exposure, white balance and sensitivity, with selectable ISO speeds ranging from 100 to 1600. Users can choose between sRGB and Adobe RGB colour space settings and in-camera processing parameters are provided for contrast, sharpness, saturation and colour tone.
The TTL-CT-SIR type autofocus system allows fitted lenses to focus quickly and accurately and seven selectable AF points are displayed in the viewfinder. The buffer memory supports continuous shooting at up to 3 frames per second for a sequence of up to 14 shots. Other features include direct printing to PictBridge or Canon PIXMA photo printers, simple-to-use software and a USB 2.0 Hi-speed interface for image management and fast transfer of files to a computer. The EOS 350D is supplied with an NB-2LH lithium-ion battery pack and charger and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II lens and is compatible with the full range of over 50 Canon EF lenses and Canon EX-series Speedlites. The silver body version is due for release on 1 March at an RRP of $1899 (lens included). A black body version is due for release in May.
