Epson Stylus Photo R800
In summary
Epson’s Stylus Photo R800 is the first and only printer to combine a long-lasting pigment ink set with high gloss paper printing. It also has a higher colour gamut than most other Epson printers, regardless of their output size. The R800’s body design is functional and it’s very well built. The ink set consists of the standard CMY inks plus red and blue, two black inks (Matte and Photo Black) and a Gloss Optimiser, containing the same high density clear resin used to encapsulate the pigment particles in the coloured ink. . . Epson Stylus Photo R800
With the colour ink cartridges priced at $19.80 each and the Gloss Optimiser at $9.90, kitting out the R800 from scratch will cost $148.50. The cyan and magenta inks are used up fastest; the red and blue inks hardly at all. Usage rates for the black inks and Gloss Optimiser depend on the type of paper you print on and how much B&W printing you do. We estimated an A4 colour print would cost approximately $4.50. Output quality was first-rate and the UltraChrome inks produced rich colours on both glossy and matte papers. Skin tones were particularly well reproduced and black and white and sepia prints were outstanding.
Strengths
- Long-lasting prints
- Outstanding B&W and sepia output
- Roll paper capable
Weaknesses
- Input feeder only accepts 20 sheets
- No paper cutter for roll paper
