Nikon’s Coolpix 4100 has a similar body, control suite and layout to the lower-resolution Coolpix 3200 and 2200 models. In auto mode, the only settings accessible are resolution/quality (combined), white balance, exposure compensation, continuous shooting, Best Shot Select and Colour Options. Five colour options are provided: standard colour, vivid colour (high saturation), B&W, sepia, and cyanotype (monochrome blue). This is more than many point-and-shoot cameras provide but, without adjustable sensitivity and exposure controls, not enough to satisfy serious photographers. The portrait, landscape, sports and night portrait modes are linked to a Scene Assist function that helps novice users with shot framing
An ‘ISO’ warning is displayed when the flash has been set to ‘off’ and light levels are low, and a camera shake icon pops up whenever slow shutter speeds could produce blurred shots. A warning displays the message ‘Picture is blurred. Save the picture?’ if blurring is detected, giving you the option of saving or deleting the shot.
Test shots in bright daylight were accurately exposed and reasonably sharp but saturation and contrast levels were slightly high. Close-up performance was excellent and the white balance control produced best results with the custom setting.
Strengths
- AF assist light effective for close subjects in dim lighting
- Scene Assist function handy for novices
- 15 scene modes
- VGA video at 15fps with sound
Weaknesses
- Indifferent low light performance (noise)
- Contrast, saturation and sharpness slightly high [BG05]
