Canon PowerShot Digital Ixus IIs
In summary
Canon’s Digital Ixus IIs is a minor update to the successful Ixus II but sports a slick ‘Silver White Finish’ to its stainless-steel body and a new Print/Share button and direct printing enablement. It’s a pity Canon didn’t put a 4-megapixel sensor in this model when they added the Print/Share button since, small size and attractive design notwithstanding, $549 for a 3.2-megapixel, 2x optical zoom camera is a big ask in the current marketplace! . .
Test shots had accurate colours and adequate sharpness but elevated saturation and a restricted dynamic range. Outdoor shots in bright conditions were rather contrasty and detail was lost in both bright highlights and deep shadows. Compression artefacts were visible when low resolution shots were enlarged to 200%. The digital zoom functioned well but offered limited magnification. However, flash performance was above-average. The custom white balance control performed very well, with the manual pre-sets almost as good, but the auto mode performed poorly under incandescent lighting. We measured an average capture lag of 0.6 seconds, although difficult subjects could take almost one second to capture. Shutter lag (with pre-focusing) averaged 0.2 seconds and the burst mode captured shots at 0.65 second intervals.
Strengths
- Fast and accurate autofocus
- Good flash performance for camera size
- Easy to use menu system
- VGA video capture
Weaknesses
- Limited range of settings in manual mode
- Poor auto white balance in incandescent light [BG05]
