The third model in Tamron’s second-generation f/2.8 Di III lenses, the 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 will be released with a Sony E mount on 31 July, with the Nikon Z mount to follow.

The new lens is a successor to the company’s 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046) lens, which was released initially in 2019, but gains a wider angle-of-view, through an expanded zoom range. Retaining the mobility and versatility of its predecessor, the 16-30mm f/2.8 G2 features improved autofocus performance, thanks to a new voice coil linear motor AF drive, which replaces the previous model’s stepping motor. It has also been updated to the latest lens design, enhancing overall operability through an improved grip surface on the lens barrel and control rings. This also includes adding a USB port so users can connect the lens to Tamron’s Lens Utility customisation software, along with the inclusion of a customisable function button.
The optical design of the new lens has 16 elements in 12 groups plus a nine-bladed iris diaphragm for enhanced bokeh. It has a minimum focusing distance of 19 cm at the 16mm focal length and 30 cm at 30mm, giving a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.4, which is ideal for close-ups and table-top shots. This lens accepts 67 mm diameter filters, which are commonly used with Tamron lenses. The Sony E-mount version is 101.8 mm long and weighs 440 grams, while the Nikon Z-mount version is 103.9 mm long and weighs 450 grams. The lens is supplied with a petal-shaped lens hood and front and rear caps. Its RRP is AU$1799. The Sony E-mount lens is due to go on sale on 31 July, while the Nikon Z version will follow on 22 August. Click here for details of local stockists.
