Winners of the 2011 World Press Photo Awards were announced over the weekend, with Australian photographers taking out three major awards.
World Press Photo has added a competition for multimedia productions in visual journalism to its annual press photography contest, which has run since 1955.
This year’s winner of the coveted World Press Photo of the Year award went to a colour image taken on 31 March, 2003, by French photographer Jean-Marc Bouju. The image depicts a hooded Iraqi war prisoner holding his 4-year-old son at a US detention camp in Iraq and portrays a rare moment of humanity in a war zone.

The World Press Photo Exhibition opens in Sydney today at the State Library of NSW and moves to Brisbane in June.
