October 2, 2005: Leica Camera (Solms) has released details of its latest compact digicam, the Leica D-Lux 2, which has many features in common with Panasonic’s DMC-LX1 model.
These include the Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 6.3- 25.2 mm f /2.8-4.9 ASPH 4x optical zoom lens, which has a range of focal lengths that extends from 28 to 112 mm (35 mm equivalent). The Panasonic-developed optical image stabiliser (O.I.S.) is also included, along with the 1/1.65-inch type 8-megapixel CCD sensor. Users have a choice of three image formats: 16:9 (8 MP); 3:2 (7 MP); 4:3 (6 MP), with the 16:9 format being ideal for widescreen HDTV viewing. The camera comes with a 207,000 pixel 2.5-inch LCD display. Still images can be recorded in RAW, TIFF or JPEG format, while movies are captured as QuickTime Motion JPEG clips, with a top resolution of 848 x 480 pixels.
Users can select from a range of 14 pre-set scene modes or use the camera’s manual shutter speed and aperture controls (P, A, S, M) to set exposures. Up to 4x digital zoom is provided and shutter speeds range from 60 to 1/2000 second in manual mode. The camera is supplied with a lithium-ion battery and charger and Leica’s new Digital Adapter 2 makes the camera ready for digiscoping, enabling users to take close-up photographs of wildlife through a spotting scope. Leica cameras are distributed in Australia by Adeal (www.adeal.com.au).
