July 8, 2006: The latest JVC Everio camcorder combines a 3-CCD imager for superior pro-quality video and 5-megapixel still pictures with the long recording time of an internal 30 GB hard disk drive.
The new JVC Everio G Series GZ-MG505, which has an RRP of $1999, goes on sale this month. Even before its release, this model won the TIPA Award for Best Camcorder of 2006. Like other Everio G Series camcorders, the GZ-MG505 eliminates the need to carry tapes or discs and can record up to seven hours of DVD movie-quality video or more than 10 hours at DVD camcorder-quality. (This is equivalent to 22 single-sided DVD camcorder discs.) Close to 10,000 still photos at a resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels can be stored if the MG505 is used for still photography. An SD slot is provided for stills capture to memory card.
The camera has a 10x optical zoom lens, which delivers 8x magnification for stills and up to 300x digital zoom for video. Its widescreen 2.7-inch Clear LCD monitor is used for shot composition and accurately displays native 16:9 videos while they are being shot or played back. The imager consists of three 1.23-megapixel (effective) CCDs, each dedicated to capturing information in the red, green and blue wavebands. JVC’s advanced prism optics and filterless 3-CCD pixel shift technology quadruple the pixel count to record 5 megapixel-class stills and videos with a wider than normal dynamic range.
JVC’s Megabrid Imaging Engine processes video and still signals separately to ensure high sensitivity and a high signal-to-noise ratio for moving pictures, and clear, high resolution progressive still images. The MG505 also comes with JVC’s 3D NR (3-Dimension Noise Reduction) processing that claims an improvement in signal/noise ratio of 2 dB and 30% reduction in overall noise plus elimination of flickering. Video is recorded in MPEG-2 format to ensure there will be no quality loss when burning them to DVD.
JVC has also included a variety of controls that provide easy access to still images and video clips that are recorded by the camera as well as building in a high level of hard disk protection and stability.
