October 4, 2006: Hasselblad has released details of its new H3D full-frame, large-sensor, medium-format DSLR camera system, which supports 48 x 36mm digital image capture.
The company claims the new system offers photographers the full benefits of professional medium-format cameras plus the ease-of-use of the best 35mm DSLRs. The H3D has been developed around a new ‘Ultra-Focus’ engine, which delivers increased lens performance and a new level of image sharpness. Information about the lens and exact capture conditions are fed into the digital camera engine for fine-tuning of the auto-focus mechanism. Processing takes into account the design of the lens and the optical specification of the sensor and adds Digital APO Correction (DAC) to minimise colour aberrations and distortion in the resulting images.
The H3D is being offered in two models, the Hasselblad H3D-22 (22 megapixels) and the Hasselblad H3D-39 (39 megapixels), with the H3D-39 having a resolution more than twice that of a high-end 35mm camera sensor. This means more and larger photosites, which ensures the highest possible image quality and moirø© free colour rendering without loss of tonal gradation.

The H3D has also been developed for maximum flexibility, offering a choice of viewfinders for image composition, including the new, interchangeable, waist-level viewfinder for the H system cameras. H3D cameras are also compatible with Hasselblad’s standard H System lenses. Three image storage options are available: CF card, a 100 GB Hasselblad Image Bank or via FireWire to a tethered computer. Hasselblad has designed a new 28mm wide angle lens especially for the H3D, to take full advantage of the Ultra-Focus and DAC functionality. The digital capture unit can also be used on a view camera with tilt and shift functionality.
