June 10, 2008: Canon will replace its popular EOS 400D model next month with a new entry-level model, the EOS 1000D, which aims to make DSLR photography more accessible to everyday photographers.
Compact and light to carry, the EOS 1000D has a stainless steel chassis and polycarbonate plus glass fibre cladding. It is the lightest Canon DSLR to date, with a body weight of just 450 grams. The new model sports a 22.2 x 14.8 mm, 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor plus 12-bit DiG!C III image processing. Like the recently-released EOS 450D, the 1000D records images on SD or SDHC memory cards and supports both CR2.RAW and JPEG image capture. Simultaneous RAW+JPEG recording is supported at the highest JPEG resolution and quality setting.

Live View shooting is supported in the EOS 100D, with the same modes – Quick and Live View – as the EOS 450D plus support for autofocusing. The user interface is straightforward and simple to operate and the camera’s 2.5-inch TFT monitor makes changing camera settings easy. Other features include the EOS Integrated Cleaning System for preventing dust from lodging on the image sensor and support for Canon’s Picture Style settings.

Metering options include evaluative, centre-weighted average and partial metering and the 1000D supports an ISO range from 100 to 1600.

A hot shoe is provided for EX-series Speedlites. The new model uses the same LP-E5 battery as the EOS 450D and is compatible with a wide range of accessories, including battery grips and more than 60 Canon lenses.
