Announced before the IBC2025 show in Amsterdam opens on 12 September, Canon’s EOS C50 brings EOS R5 Mark II features to professional filmmakers and cinematographers.
The Canon EOS C50 is designed for professional filmmakers and cinematographers.
Given its ‘C’ designation (as distinct from the ‘V’ designation for vlogging cameras), the Cinema EOS C50 camera is essentially a cinematography-focused version of the EOS R5 Mark II and, as such, would replace the EOS R5 C. Its rig-ready body comes with the same 45-megapixel stacked BSI CMOS sensor and DIGIC X and DIGIC Accelerator combined image processors, although resolution is reduced to 32-megapixels in order to achieve better heat management and faster video readouts.
The new camera features a prominent red record button and tally light and will be the first Cinema EOS camera with Open Gate recording (using the entire surface of the sensor) to enable flexible aspect ratios. It will also offer full-sensor readout and Dual Gain Output (DGO) for enhanced dynamic range (15+ stops). These features equip the camera to offer advanced video features like 6K 60p full-sensor readout RAW recording and well as 4K at up to 120 fps (uncropped or minimal crop, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal) and Full HD at up to 240 fps, along with support for Canon RAW Light (LT/STD/HQ), Canon Log 2/3, HDR-PQ, XF-AVC and MP4 (H.265/H.264) codecs. It also offers wanted add-ons like internal ND filters, XLR inputs and dedicated timecode ports. Waveform/vectorscope monitoring, false colour reproduction and anamorphic de-squeezing functionality are also provided.
Unlike the EOS R5 C, the new camera’s body design is similar to the gimbal-friendly EOS R50 V, which we reviewed in May this year.
The EOC C50’s aluminium alloy body is expected to weigh approximately 650 grams and comes with second-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocusing with up to 1,053 selectable AF zones plus AI subject detection for people, animals and vehicles. Users can also register up to 10 subjects for face/eye tracking, making the new camera ideal for documentary-style recording (including wedding videography) or event shooting. Sensor-shift IBIS provides up to eight stops of shake correction, along with electronic IS coordination for video.
The compact aluminium alloy camera body is rig-ready and also weather sealed and includes an active cooling fan to enable ‘unlimited’ recording. It has dual media slots for CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II cards plus a full-size HDMI 2.1 and USB-C 3.2 ports as well as timecode I/O support for multi-cam setups. An optional top handle is available to enable a wider range of shooting positions (especially low-angle work) and for mounting accessories like microphones and screens.
The target market for the EOS C50 is professional (and semi-professional) film-makers and content creators who require superior sensor performance and video-capable tools like built-in ND filters and raw capture options in a compact, highly portable and versatile body.
The Canon C50 body has an RRP of $5,899 and is expected to be available in Australia from November 2025. See more details on the Canon website.
