Tamron has announced a new ‘everyday’ zoom lens, the 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD, which is available in mounts for Sony E and Nikon Z full frame cameras and provides a more compact alternative to the 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058) lens. Featuring an optical design containing 15 elements in 13 groups, it includes two moulded glass aspherical elements, one XLD element one LD element and one hybrid moulded glass LD element, positioned as shown in the diagram below. A nine-bladed iris diaphragm with a rounded aperture enures smooth bokeh for up to two steps of stopping down.

As well as its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, the new lens has an VXD linear autofocus motor for fast and ultra-quiet focus performance for both photo and video recording. The Sony E-mount version is 119.2 mm long and weighs 565 grams, while the Z-mount version measures 121.5 mm in length and weighs 575 grams, making it ideal for travel and use in everyday photography. Its 67mm filter thread ensures wide compatibility with standard lens accessories. The lens also features moisture-resistant construction with a fluorine coating on the front lens element to repel liquids and keep the lens safe from unpredictable outdoor conditions. The new lens supports key camera autofocus and lens correction functions in Sony E and Nikon Z cameras. An MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 22 cm at the 35mm focal length and 65 cm gives maximum magnification ratios of 1:1.9 and 1:3.9,respectively. Compatibility with Tamron Lens Utility gives users the ability to customise autofocus behaviour, and select between linear or non-linear focus ring control.
The new lens is expected to ship in late March or early April and will carry a similar price to the Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens (AU$1799). It is listed here on Tamron’s Australian website and some re-sellers have it listed for pre-order.
