The competition is split into eight categories: Bird Portrait, Birds in Flight, Bird Behaviour, Backyard Birds, Human Impact, Birds in the Landscape, Youth and a special theme prize, which this year focused on Birds of prey of the day. An additional Portfolio Prize is awarded to a compilation of up to six Australian bird photos, each connected in theme, location or subject matter, which tell a compelling story.
The competition is jointly sponsored by Nikon Australia and the Lake Cowell Foundation with a cash prize of AU$1000 awarded to the winner of each category and $2000 for the Portfolio prize. This year sees the launch of the first Award for BirdLife Australia Photographer of the Year. The winner will be selected from all competition entries and will receive a Grand Prize of a Nikon Z 8 camera valued at $7,449 RRP.
