The latest firmware update for the Nikon Z6III introduces features and upgrades that will bring this camera close to offering the capabilities of the more up-market Z8.

Nikon’s just-released update takes the firmware in the Z6III from “C” Firmware Version 1.11 to 2.00 but implementing the following major changes (some of which have been reflected in adjustments to the camera’s menus):

  • Subject detection AF gains a separate setting for Birds to differentiate the category from the more general Animal setting. This setting has been designed to improve the ability of the AF system to differentiate smaller birds from bushy backgrounds.
  • Auto Capture has been added to the photo shooting menu. Users can select capture criteria from [Motion] (the direction the subject is moving), [Distance] (how far the subject is from the camera), and [Subject detection] (whether or not a subject of a given type is detected), and the camera will take photographs automatically while it detects subjects that meet the selected criteria.
  • [Options] settings have been added under [Focus shift shooting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] to allow [Pixel shift shooting] to be used together with focus shift shooting and under [Pixel shift shooting] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU] to allow [AE bracketing] to be used together with pixel shift shooting. [Starting storage folder] has also been added.
  • Support has been added for the Nikon Authenticity Service, which enhances content credibility by using provenance information and other data in accordance with the C2PA standards. (Prior registration is required.)
  • A [USB streaming (UVC/UAC)] setting has been added to [USB] in the [NETWORK MENU].

Many other relatively minor changes are also being made with this new firmware including a camera-based focus limiting switch, compression settings for the JPEGs created with the pre-release system, the addition of Recall Shooting Functions and magnification cancel with shutter release press.  The new firmware is available to download from the Nikon Download Centre now.
