Full review
Identical in shape to the DX6490, Kodak’s DX7490 has the same Schneider-Kreuznach 10x optical zoom lens but a higher-resolution 5-megapixel CCD sensor. The internal memory has been doubled to 32MB, which holds eight high-res shots. Two compression levels are provided. The EVF is sharper and brighter, and AF framing marks are displayed to show where the camera is focusing. The DX7590 offers a VGA movie setting with a frame rate of 12 frames per second. MPEG-4 compression allows one minute and 47 seconds of video to be stored in the on-board memory. Fourteen scene modes are now available, along with P, A, S and M and a custom setting where users can store exposure and flash compensation and ISO settings for quick recall. Four white balance pre-sets are provided but no manual measurement. The colour mode menu has settings for natural, high and low colour, B/W and sepia, and sharpness is also adjustable.
On test, the DX7590 produced photographs with slightly elevated contrast and saturation, although colour fidelity was generally high. Pictures had excellent edge-to-edge sharpness but sharpening artefacts were common. Low light shots were clean but noisy at ISO 400 and 800. Response times were average.
