Fujifilm’s FinePix A340 is targeted squarely at point-and-shoot photographers who want a camera that has high resolution but is simple to use. The 4-megapixel sensor is a regular CCD and it’s partnered with a standard 3x optical zoom lens with fairly average specifications. The default shooting mode is fully automatic. Manual mode settings cover resolution/quality, white balance and exposure compensation only. Scene modes are provided for portrait, night, sports and landscape shots and button access (via the four-way controller) selects the flash modes and macro focus. The plastic body looks attractive and is small enough to slip into a jacket pocket. A video-out socket allows the A340 to be connected to a TV set and the autoplay function supports slideshow viewing. Limited in-camera cropping facilities are provided. Movies can be captured at 10 frames per second in QVGA or QQVGA resolution.
Still shots were well resolved with good colour accuracy and saturation, but elevated contrast. Low light shooting is limited by a two second shutter speed, but performance was generally good. The white balance did better with the manual pre-sets than the auto mode. Shutter lag was a consistent 0.8 seconds and burst capture is not supported.
Strengths
- Good picture quality for resolution/price
- Simple to use
Weaknesses
- Limited low light capabilities
- Weak flash
- Power hungry [BG05]
