Canon PowerShot S60
A significant upgrade to the PowerShot S50, the S60 features a 3.6x wide zoom lens and a redesigned control panel with a ‘proper’ four-way controller, and a Print/Share Button that makes it easy to print or download images straight from the camera to a PC or PictBridge-enabled printer. Focus bracketing is available for manual focus with the P, Tv, Av and M shooting modes. However AF area selection is only available in the auto and scene settings. Movie clips can be captured at three resolutions: VGA (at 10 frames per second), QVGA, and QQVGA (both at 15fps).
On test, the S60 delivered sharp images with natural-looking colours and moderate contrast and saturation levels. Exposures were positioned to provide an excellent balance between highlights and shadows. Long exposures taken after dark were noise-free at ISO 50 and 100 but noise affected at ISO 400.
Responsiveness was varied: the sliding lens cover design meant start-up and shut-down times were around four seconds. Capture lag was as short as 0.2 seconds when shots were pre-focused but as long as 1.5 seconds when focusing was required. Burst intervals ranged from 0.6 seconds for the high-speed setting to 0.8 seconds in standard mode.
Strengths
- Wide angle of view (28mm)
- Accurate metering
- RAW capture supported
- Above-average image quality
Weaknesses
- Weak flash
- Poor auto white balance in incandescent light
- 9-point AiAF not supported in P, Tv, Av or M modes. [BG05]
