      In summary

Canon’s Digital Ixus 750 l has the same 7-megapixel CCD sensor, smart metal body and 3x optical zoom lens as the Ixus 700 it replaces, but is $50 cheaper. A large 2.5-inch LCD is now provided, with ‘UI display improvements’, the most useful being selectable grid lines, which make it easier to ‘square-up’ subjects (especially horizons) when composing shots and warnings that indicate the potential for camera shake (a flashing red icon and the shutter speed are displayed on-screen). . . Canon’s Digital Ixus 750 has the same 7-megapixel CCD sensor, smart metal body and 3x optical zoom lens as the Ixus 700 it replaces, but is $50 cheaper. Canon has made it easier to frame shots in low light by including a new Night Display Function that automatically brightens the subject on display. The screen is also backlit to improve visibility without compromising power consumption (which is admirably low) and you can toggle its brightness up and down by briefly pressing the display button. There’s also an animated display of icons when you switch between shooting modes with the mode dial – cute but functionally non-essential. A small optical viewfinder is also provided – but it only shows about 85% of the sensor’s field of view.

We put the Ixus 750 through rigorous testing by using it to shoot 1800 pictures on a 5-week overseas trip (details on our website). Our favourable impression of the camera’s performance was confirmed by Imatest, which showed image resolution to be good overall, with images sharp from corner to corner. Colour accuracy was generally good and saturation was only slightly elevated. Slight chromatic aberration was detected but it was well-controlled and, although barrel distortion was noticeable at wide angle, no pin cushioning was found at the telephoto setting.

The camera powered up in just over a second and capture lag averaged 0.35 seconds, reducing to almost instantaneous with pre-focusing. Shot-to-shot times ranged from 1.2 seconds without flash to between 1.5 and 5 seconds with flash, depending on subject distance. [26]
