Roughly a month after its last firmware update, Panasonic has released Firmware version 1.2 for its full-frame 44-megapixel hybrid mirrorless camera, adding promised video capabilities.

The new firmware will bring the camera into line with the advanced features found in the recently-updated Lumix S1II and S1IIE models to give users an enriched toolset. The new firmware extends the original camera’s 6.2K resolution open gate recording to 8.1K resolution with the full sensor area output Panasonic had promised. It also provides the ability to output a Raw data stream that can be downloaded by BlackMagic and Atomos external recorders. Other new additions include the ‘Urban Sports’ subject recognition AF mode, the ability to output 10-bit HEIF images, extended HLG support, including an HLG response curve and HLG View Assist mode for previewing the effect as well as a Multiple Frame Marker, Capture One Wireless tethering and Focus Stacking. Firmware ver1.2 also enables ARRI LogC3 with the Upgrade Software Key DMW-SFU3A (sold separately). The following additional capabilities will also be added:

  • Direct transfers from the CFexpress Type B or SD memory card to an external SSD can be made, giving more workflow options and greater flexibility.
  • Supports recording proxy files to the internal memory card during HDMI RAW video data output.
  • Supports data transfer via Wi-Fi and wired LAN (USB-LAN conversion) with Capture One.
  • Compatible with timecode synchronisation via Bluetooth.
  • Connectivity with UVC/UAC devices is supported.
  • Compatible with Bluetooth connectivity with DJI’s gimbals.
  • HLG View Assist will be available for accurate gradation and exposure checks on the camera’s monitor or viewfinder, as well as on external monitors that do not support HLG.
  • The focus ring can be used as a control ring enabling assigning of key functions. Additionally, the focus rotation direction can be selected in MF mode.
  • The AF frame colour can be chosen from 10 colours for better usability.

New firmware has also been released for the Lumix S1 II and S1 IIIE , adding the followign capabilities:

  • ARRI LogC3 will be available by using the DMW-SFU3A Software Upgrade Key (sold separately), enabling the colours to match ARRI’s digital cinema cameras.
  • The frame aspect ratio options will be expanded from 10 to 17 and enable simultaneous display of up to three frames.
  • The AF frame colour can be chosen from 10 colours for better usability.
  • Focus stacking function introduces the ability to synthesise images taken at multiple focus positions to produce a single image with deep depth of field and sharpness throughout.
  • Supports data transfer via Wi-Fi and wired LAN (USB-LAN conversion) with Capture One.
