Canva has announced that Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher will be combined and henceforth offered for free – although with some limitations on the new AI-powered tools.

When Affinity joined the Canva family late last year, there was speculation it could become a subscription service since Canva operates on a subscription model. However, the new release makes Affinity Photo free as a perpetual licence, retaining its attraction to photographer who want to avoid subscription-based software. There are, nevertheless, some limitations to what users will get in the free application. The new AI-powered tools will only be available in the Canva Pro subscription, which costs US$120 per year. These tools include useful functions like Generative Fill, Expand & Edit and Remove Background plus others that will likely have less relevance to most potential users.
The new integration will mean users can find all tools can be used in all three personas – Pixel, Vector and Layout – and design, edit and publish without switching apps or interrupting workflow. A button in the top left corner of the screen makes it easy to switch between the pixel, vector and layout user interfaces.
