Nikon has released firmware version 3.00 for the full-frame/FX-format Z f camera, adding a new in-camera Film Grain feature and providing more than 20 additional upgrades and enhancements.

The Film Grain feature allows users to add a grainy effect to photos and videos to simulate the look of traditional film photography. It provides three options for adjusting grain size and six for intensity adjustments. Users can combine their own combinations with the free downloadable Imaging Recipes. An [Only during zoom] option has been added to [Focus peaking] to ensure focus peaking is only displayed during magnified views for manual focusing.  Additional improvements include:

  • An Automatic monitor display switch prevents unintentional eye-sensor activation of the viewfinder by fingers, body, or straps when the vari-angle monitor is open, allowing for a more comfortable shooting experience.
  • The electronic shutter sound can be turned on for high-speed frame capture + and Pixel Shift shooting. Pixel Shift shooting settings can now be adjusted when the self-timer mode is selected.
  • The [Record camera orientation] feature now includes a [Video] option, allowing videos recorded in portrait orientation to be played back and edited in portrait orientation on the importing device.
  • The registration flow of Imaging Recipes in Nikon Imaging Cloud has been simplified with an automatic confirmation dialog on the camera monitor.
  • USB streaming (UVC/UAC) has been added to the NETWORK MENU and a new method for adding Picture Controls from Nikon Imaging Cloud is now available.
  • Pre-Release Capture is now available from compatible Bluetooth remote controllers.

In addition, a number of minor issues have been fixed. Click here to visit the download page at the Nikon Download Centre to access the new firmware.
