Nothofagus forest

A Nothofagus forest in Autumn. A large dead tree in the middle of young forest.
Don’s response
This striking image might easily be mistaken for a picture from the famously vibrant autumnal forests of North America. But these vivid colours are the seasonal livery of the Tasmanian myrtle (Nothofagus cunninghamii) and they provide an attractive backdrop for the white-boned ancient still standing in their midst.
Photographer Dallas Nock has positioned the old tree just a little off-centre and through that subtle asymmetry has given his image a quiet but insistent dynamism.
