Megalong Illuminated Hill
By Gavin Kellett
Canon R5; RF 100-400 lens @ 400mm; 1/250s; f/9.0; ISO 200; hand held
Shooting into the sun from Cahill’s Lookout in Katoomba looking into Megalong Valley was challenging. The dynamic range made a single shot hard to capture the shadow detail along with the very bright highlights. Some partial cloud cover provided much appreciated diffusion while still allowing the small hill to be illuminated.
Don’s response
A 100-400mm lens might not be what comes to mind when you think about what to pack when you set off on a landscape photography expedition. But having that extra “reach” can come in handy for circumstances such as this one. Gavin Kellett has deployed his long glass to excellent effect in this beautifully layered study.
Yes, the elements came together for him, but his skilful management of the very wide dynamic range is evident in the shadow values. There’s just enough detail to enable us to differentiate the trees and clearings on the nearest ridge but not so much as to compete with the star turn of the next, sunlit hillside beyond.
