Concrete walls can be very interesting, even hypnotic for some people.
The lady seems to be staring at the blank concrete wall; but she was actually reading the information plaque relating to the repetitious miniature city sculpture on the floor behind her.
What caught my interest was the vast textured concrete wall, the repetitious foreground, the lone visitor seemingly staring at the wall, all balanced against the deeply shadowed and contrast infused painting.
Don’s response
When I saw this for the first time, I didn’t know the story behind Phil Berry’s enigmatic image. I liked its mysterious quality nevertheless, and even with the explanation, the photograph retains its pleasantly odd quality.
It is of course a matter of taste, but I’d be inclined to leave the height of the picture unchanged while cropping out most of the wall on the other side of the line that delineates the right-hand side of the rectangle our studious visitor is facing.
