Kodak’s new EasyShare Picture Viewer is an electronic ‘brag book’ that lets users store a selection of image files (JPEGs only) and play them back on a small (2.5-inch) LCD screen. Small enough to fit in a shirt pocket, the Picture Viewer is supplied with a slip-on leatherette case that shields the screen when the device is being carried.
Charging the internal battery takes about 3.5 hours connected to a PC or camera/printer dock. A recessed button in the top right corner switches it on and a fully-charged battery will provide up to three hours of picture viewing time.
Connecting the Picture Viewer to a computer automatically loads pictures stored in your Favourites folder (which is set up by Kodak’s EasyShare software). However, you can’t transfer images from a memory card directly to the Picture Viewer and the on-board memory can only hold about 75 image files. But you can use a Kodak EasyShare printer dock (series 3 or 6 only) and the supplied insert to print image files stored internally or on an SD or MMC card, or use the supplied USB cable to link it to any PictBridge enabled printer. If the printer dock has A/V output, installing the Picture Viewer allows you to display a slideshow of stored files on the TV screen.
The Picture Viewer is very easy to use and the LCD is clear and bright. On-screen icons show the battery status, picture number, image location (card or internal memory) and whether the picture has been tagged for printing or emailing. The menu lets you display a slideshow, delete or magnify selected shots, view nine thumbnails or access ‘Picture info’ (file name plus date and time when the shot was taken only; not metadata). You can also set picture intervals, transitions and loop facilities and adjust the LCD brightness with this control.
The main problem with this device is its limitations. If all you want is a portable ‘brag book’ it’s a good option; however for photographers who want data storage capacity, the EasyShare Picture Viewer will not be adequate.
