Iomega’s external Super DVD Writer offers fast burning speeds for CD and DVD disks and is compatible with high-capacity Double-Layer DVD technology, making it useful for photographers with digital images to archive. Solidly built, with a smart grey and black exterior, it comes with a generous software bundle containing applications for burning disks containing photos, videos, music and data. A wizard-based interface helps beginners perform key tasks and launches the right application for each job.
Setting up the Super DVD Writer is easy; you simply install the software, plug in the power supply and connect the device to your computer via the supplied USB cable. Windows or Mac PCs with the latest operating systems should recognise the device and install it automatically, placing an icon on your PC’s desktop for launching the DVD Wizard, which provides one-click access to the other applications in the software bundle. These include Sonic MyDVD LE, which is used for creating DVD movies and photo slideshows, MusicMatch Jukebox for ripping MP3 music files from a CD, Hot Burn Pro, the disk-burning application and Iomega Automatic Backup. You can also play DVD movies via the Sonic Cineplayer application.
Opening Hot Burn Pro lets you create music or data disks from stored files, copy the contents of one disk to another and create labels for printable CD or DVD disks. In our tests the device had some problems identifying the type of disk in the drive correctly, and no manual override was provided. Once this hurdle was overcome with help from Iomega’s excellent online support, it worked well.
Disk writing can be tracked on the display, which shows buffer capacity, burn progress and details of the task in hand. The Progress bar also shows the elapsed time (inaccurately by our stopwatch). It took just over 10 minutes to burn a full 4.7 GB DVD+R at the top burn speed of 16x and less than a minute to write a CD using 48x burn speed. Burns are verified by playing the disk back in a PC.
