[ia] The Perfection 4180 Photo scanner has double the resolution of the 2480 model, and can be used for scanning medium format film frames as well as 35mm negatives or slides. Up to 12 frames of 35mm film, or up to four 35mm mounted slides and six medium format film frames can be accommodated in the transparency unit.
Despite its higher resolution, the Perfection 4180 matched or bettered the scanning speeds of the 2480 model – without being spectacularly speedy. Our tests produced the following scan times:
- One A4 colour print using Epson Scan at the highest JPEG quality – 32 seconds (10 seconds to preview);
- One 10 x 15cm print to A4 size at 300 dpi – preview 8 seconds plus scan 9 seconds
- Preview scan of a strip of 6 unmounted 35mm reversal images – 1 min 10 seconds
- One 35mm film frame at 300dpi for A4 output – 2 min 45 seconds;
- One 35 mm B&W negative at 300dpi for 10 x 15cm output – 1 minute 55 seconds.
Overall performance was similar to the Perfection 2480 Photo, but with higher output resolution, which allows you to make larger prints.
