The CanoScan 8400F offers many of the features of the CanoScan 9950F but its resolution is lower, it can only scan 35mm and medium format film, and its price is considerably lower. Three film adaptors are provided: a strip film holder that can accommodate two six-frame filmstrips, a slide holder for four mounted 35mm slides, and a medium format film holder for a strip of film up to 22cm long.

Our tests produced the following scan times:
- One A4 colour print at 300dpi – 17 sec.
- One 10 x 15cm print to A4 size at 300dpi – 39 sec.
- Preview a strip of four 35mm colour negatives – 23 sec.
- Scan four 35mm colour negatives for 10 x 15cm output at 300dpi – 15 min. 52 sec.
- One 35mm reversal frame for 10 x 15cm output at 300dpi – 1 min. 29 sec.
- One 35mm reversal frame for A4 output at 300dpi – 2 min 25 sec.
