GretagMacbeth Eye-One Photo
In summary
Full review
GretagMacbeth’s Eye-One Photo is designed for photographers who need consistent, reliable colour for monitors and other digital imaging equipment. It is supplied with GretagMacbeth’s Eye-One Match 3 software, a Mini ColorChecker, USB cable, ambient light measurement head, ruler for chart measurement in scan mode, scan target, monitor holders and spot colour guide. Like the Eye-One Display 2, which was reviewed in issue 24, a clip-on diffuser is included for measuring the ambient light in your working area.
This diffuser also allows users to check lighting conditions in viewing areas and measure lighting in display situations, and the free Eye-One Share software can include these values in various ways so photographers and designers can better match their offerings to clients’ expectations. (Download it from www.intl.i1color.com.) Unlike the Display 2, the Eye-One Pro can be used for profiling multiple monitor systems (including set-ups with different types of monitors) and notebook PCs, as well as digital cameras, scanners, printers, and even projectors.
Using the Eye-One Pro is a little different from using the Display 2 model, although both devices use the same software. The colour meter must be calibrated before each run by sitting it on a special stand with a white patch. GretagMacbeth provides excellent online training modules that take you step-by-step through each type of calibration.
The device is then mounted so the measuring head sits on (or near) the middle of the screen. From there on, the calibration process is identical to the Display 2. It took just under three minutes to calibrate a CRT monitor using the Advanced system, which makes the Eye-One Pro significantly faster than its cheaper ‘cousin’.
Local distributor, Kayell Australia, provides periodic colour management training sessions in major population centres, charging $132 for a full-day course. Details are usually posted on the company’s website at www.kayellaustralia.com.au. [27]
