Available in blue, silver or black, Sony’s DSC-P150 sports a 7-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens. Both multi-pattern and spot metering are supported, but exposure adjustments can only be made in the P and scene modes. However, only two aperture settings are provided; f2.8 and f5.6 at the wide position, and f5.2 and f10 for tele. Flash output levels are adjustable in P, M and scene modes and exposure compensation of +/- 2 EV in 0.3 EV steps is provided. No manual/custom white balance is provided, an unusual omission in a camera of this calibre, and although a live histogram is available in still capture mode, it’s pretty small and, therefore, of limited value.
In our tests, the P150 produced well-exposed pictures with slightly elevated contrast and colour saturation. Low light shots had little noise, even at ISO 400. The white balance controls handled fluorescent lighting better than incandescent in both the auto and pre-set modes. The AF system occasionally missed the mark with close-ups and the flash barely illuminated an average-sized room. We recorded an average capture lag of 0.6 seconds, which reduced to 0.2 seconds with pre-focusing.
Strengths
- Adjustable flash output
- Live histogram display
- Excellent exposure metering
Weaknesses
- No manual white balance setting
- AF system unreliable with close-ups
- Weak flash [BG05]
