Ricoh’s Caplio RZ1 comes with six clip-on face plates that let you match the camera to your mood or outfit. Designed for ease of use, it has six scene settings (portrait, sports, landscape, might scene, text and high-sensitivity) plus a small real time histogram display. An ADJ button gives users quick access to exposure, white balance and ISO adjustments and lets them customise frequently-used settings. The RZ1 can shoot to within 1cm in macro mode and a handy AF Target Selection function lets you shift the focus point using the four-way arrow selector.
On test, the Caplio RZ1 produced pictures with well-controlled colour saturation and reasonably accurate hues in outdoor shots. However, edge-to-edge sharpness was below average and the white balance delivered its best results with the custom setting. The flash was weak but low light shots were clean, though slightly noise-affected at ISO 400 and 800. The RZ1 was quick to wake and fast to focus in most situations. We measured an average capture lag of 0.5 seconds, which reduced to 0.15 seconds with pre-focusing. The standard burst mode captured single shots at 0.25 second intervals, while the multi-up settings recorded at 0.15 seconds intervals.
