The Camedia D-590 Zoom features a 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom lens and an enhanced, ‘semi-transmissive’ LCD display that is easier to view in bright lighting than normal LCDs. No viewfinder is provided. The control suite is basic. A slider on the front panel exposes the lens and turns the power off and on, the shutter button is located on the top panel and the rear panel carries the remaining controls. Most camera settings are controlled automatically but the main menu lets users access the resolution, exposure compensation and white balance settings and enter the mode menu, which covers a range of camera, card and set-up selections.
On test, the D-590 Zoom produced sharp, colour-accurate pictures, although exposures favoured shadow detail over highlights. We found evidence of chromatic aberration and slight sharpening artefacts in some shots. Low light shots were noise affected but free of stuck pixels. The auto white balance produced acceptable colours with both incandescent and fluorescent lighting and the pre-sets gave slightly better colour accuracy. The flash was surprisingly powerful, giving enough light to illuminate an average room. Close-up performance was very good, particularly with the super-macro setting.
Strengths
- Well built and easy to use
- Good white balance performance
- Accurate colour reproduction
Weaknesses
- Visible noise in low light shots
- No optical viewfinder
- Blocked highlights in bright conditions [BG05]
