Kodak’s EasyShare DX 7630 has features to attract photo enthusiasts but presents them in a way that is targeted more at point-and-shoot photographers. The camera’s 6-megapixel sensor is impressive and its plastic body is well-built and thoughtfully designed. User-adjustable controls include P, A, S and M shooting modes, exposure and flash adjustments, ISO settings, 16 scene pre-sets, and a custom mode that lets you save ‘user-created’ selections. The large LCD monitor and easy-to-read menus are superb, and the DX7630 offers long time exposures of up to 64 seconds in the S and M modes. On the minus side, only two compression levels are provided – and the default is the higher one. Exposure compensation and bracketing only cover +/- 1.0 EV and only two continuous shooting options are provided.
The Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon lens produced detailed pictures with an above average dynamic range in bright outdoor subjects. Colour saturation was slightly high in these shots but more natural in low-contrast lighting. The white balance handled a wide range of lighting exceptionally well in both its auto and pre-set modes. Video quality was well above average and long exposures were clean and noise-free at all ISO settings.
Strengths
- Above average picture quality
- Adjustable flash output
- Long exposures to 64 seconds
Weaknesses
- Significant AF lag with some subjects
- No manual focus control
- No uncompressed mode and default compression is high [BG05]
