Kodak’s 4-megapixel CX7430 features an all-glass Kodak Retinar aspheric lens with 3x optical zoom. Up to 4x digital zoom is also provided. The Kodak Colour Science image processing chip supports four resolution settings: Best (2304 x 1728 pixels), Best 3:2 (2304 x 1536 for snapshot-shaped prints), Better (1656 x 1242) and Good (1200 x 900 pixels). Compression is non-adjustable. Users can set the camera’s sensitivity between ISO 80 and 400, apply +/- 2.0 steps of exposure compensation, choose between auto, daylight, tungsten and fluorescent white balance settings, and change from multi-pattern to centre-weighted or spot metering. Multi-zone and centre-zone focusing are also provided and there’s a ‘long time exposure’ setting that selects shutter speeds between 0.7 and four seconds.
The test camera produced images with elevated contrast and saturation, which meant highlight and shadow details were lost in outdoor shots in bright sunlight, and colours had an almost unreal intensity. Sharpening artefacts were visible in 100% enlargements and compression artefacts could be seen at higher magnifications. However, video output was excellent and the white balance control was an above-average performer. Four-second exposures taken in low-light conditions were clean and noise-free, giving the CX7430 an advantage over many similarly-priced cameras.
Strengths
- Good picture quality for the price
- Simple to use
- Above average auto white balance
- Compatible with Kodak Printer Docks
Weaknesses
- Restricted range of controls
- Images slightly over-processed [BG05]
