Fujifilm’s 5.1-megapixel FinePix V10 has a slimline metal body with a large LCD and plastic DV-in and A/V and USB port covers. No viewfinder is provided but a rule-of-thirds grid can be displayed to aid shot composition. Controls are split between the ‘F’ button, which lies on the top panel and handles resolution, ISO and colour modes, and four small buttons below the LCD. The four-way controller is replaced by an up/down lever and two arrow pads, which are fiddly to use.
Seven scene modes and two burst settings are provided and four video games (Number Puzzle, Block Buster, Maze and Shooting Game) are accessible in playback mode. The first three can use your own image as a background. You can also add voice memos via the playback menu. Movie mode is accessed via a slider on the side panel. The V10 can record VGA video at 30fps with sound. A new auto shooting mode, ‘Natural Light & with Flash’, takes two shots in quick succession, with and without flash, and displays them side-by-side for comparison.
The test camera produced bright, punchy pictures with elevated saturation and good colour accuracy. However, the auto white balance failed to correct tungsten lighting. No manual WB adjustment is provided. Imatest showed resolution to be good up to ISO 400 but the ISO 800 and 1600 settings produced visible noise, the latter also reducing image resolution. Images were somewhat over-sharpened. Lateral chromatic aberration was detected at a moderate level, and JPEG artefacts were obvious in digital zoom shots.
The camera took roughly two seconds to start and shut down. Capture lag averaged 0.6 seconds, reducing to 0.1 seconds with pre-focusing. The high-speed burst mode recorded at one frame/second, while the standard mode was slightly slower. It took just over a second to process a shot. [28]
