Canon’s PowerShot S1 IS sports a 10x optical zoom lens plus a gyro-based image stabilisation system. The zoon is powered by an ultrasonic motor (USM) which is fast, quiet and reasonably easy to control. In video mode, where the S1 IS supports VGA capture with sound at 30 frames per second, the zoom switches to its slowest speed so no noise is recorded. Thirteen shooting modes are available through the mode dial, which is divided into the standard Canon Image and Creative zones and includes a custom mode for saving frequently used settings. The menu button calls up seven pages, covering 18 recording options, six play settings, 12 set-ups and a customisable ‘My Camera’ menu with six settings. With all this superb functionality, we felt it was a pity Canon hadn’t put at least a 4-megapixel sensor in this model.
The S1 IS performed well for its sensor resolution. Outdoor shots in bright lighting had accurate colours but bright highlights were often lost. Low light shots were a tad noisy, especially at ISO 400. White balance performance was acceptable and response times were average but the flash was underpowered for the reach of the lens.
Strengths
- 10x optical zoom lens with effective stabilisation
- Excellent movie capabilities
- Adjustable flash output
Weaknesses
- Battery compartment can be difficult to close
- Low sensor resolution for price [BG05]
