The PIXMA Pro-10 sits in the middle of three A3+ printers that were initially announced by Canon at Photokina 2012. Designed primarily for photo enthusiasts, it uses the same Lucia inks as the higher-specified PIXMA Pro-1, which we reviewed in January 2012, but with one grey tank instead of the Pro-1’s three grey inks.

In summary

Small ink tanks make the Pro-10 more suitable for photographers who produce an occasional A3+ print than those who make a lot of prints (for example by creating photo books). Other features also make the Pro-10 more suitable for low-volume printing.

As in the Pro-100, users can clean some internal parts of the printer and there are procedures to follow if prints are damaged by smearing and tracking. But the maintenance sponge, which collects the excess ink that is sprayed during the printing process, is not user-replaceable.

Enthusiast photographers will welcome the support for ICC profiles not only for Canon papers but also third party papers from Ilford, Hahnemuhle, Canson and Moab. The free Colour Management Tool Pro software, which is available as a download from the support menu on the Canon website, supports colour calibration and ICC profile creation with popular colorimeters like the i1Pro and ColorMunki.

For novice users, the bundled  My Image Garden  software provides an easy to use interface for everyday printing on standard-sized papers and coated optical disks.  Print Studio Pro  makes it easy for novice users to obtain good results.

It also lets you print photos in various styles (bordered, borderless, index and monochrome) via a plug-in with applications such as Canon Digital Photo Professional, Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Elements.

Photographers who want Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity will find it effectively integrated in the Pro-10. This feature enables the printer to be shared by multiple users who are connected to home, work or educational networks.
