Announced in October, 2015, the new lens is particularly suitable for landscape and nature photography, where its flat field ensures the corners of the image remain sharp, enabling the  entire image area to be usable. The fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 makes it suitable for night photography, where its very low aberration levels ensure high image quality when many open light sources dominate the scene.

The Otus 1.4/28 lens features an all-metal construction with a precise mechanical build, large rotation angle, and easy-grip focus ring. Its optical design consists of 16 elements in 13 groups, including two aspherical lenses and eight elements made from special glass with anomalous partial dispersion. Because this lens is an apochromat, chromatic aberrations (axial chromatic aberrations) are effectively negligible. Distortion is also largely eliminated by the lens design. Aperture settings range from f/1.4 to f/16 and this lens will focus to within 30 cm of subjects.
The Otus 1.4/28 lens is available with a ZF.2 mount for Nikon cameras and a ZE mount for Canon DSLRs. In each case, it is best suited to cameras with 36 x 24 mm sensors. The ZF.2 mount version is 152 mm long and weighs 1.35 kilograms. The ZE mount version is 154 mm long and weighs 1.39 kilograms.
