Winners of the 2011 World Press Photo Awards were announced over the weekend, with Australian photographers taking out three major awards.

 

February 14, 2011: Winners of the 2011 World Press Photo Awards were announced over the weekend, with Australian photographers taking out three major awards.
Overall winner of the World Press Photo of the Year was South African photographer, Jodi Bieber, for a picture of an 18-year-old woman from Oruzgan province in Afghanistan, whose face was mutilated by her husband after she complained of violent treatment. Jodi Bieber is only the second South African to win the highest honour in the contest but has previously won eight World Press Photo Awards.
Australian photographers recognised in the awards include Daniel Berehulak, Adam Pretty and Steve Christo. Daniel Berehulak won the first prize stories award in the People in the News category, for the images he captured of the devastating floods in Pakistan between August and September; Adam Pretty was announced as the first prize stories winner in the Sports category, for his wide ranging portfolio of images. Steve Christo took out third prize in the singles category of the Sports section.
