May 11, 2007: The World Press Photo Exhibition opens in Sydney today at the State Library of NSW and moves to Brisbane in June. Showcasing the best photojournalism of 2006, the exhibition of 62 photographs and photo stories has been brought to Sydney by Canon Australia and supported by Getty Images, JC Decaux and TNT. It displays the best pictures in 10 categories, selected from 78,083 images submitted by 4,460 professional photographers from 124 countries. Australian photographers, Craig Golding and Steve Christo, both of whom work for The Sydney Morning Herald, are among this year’s award winners, taking out second and third prizes in the Sports Action Stories categories. This year’s winner was US photographer, Spencer Platt of Getty Images, whose photograph (shown above) of group of Lebanese youths driving through a South Beirut neighbourhood devastated by Israeli bombings was selected by the jury as World Press Photo of the Year 2006. The exhibition will be held at the State Library of NSW, from 11 May to 31 May 2007. Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm; weekends 11am-5pm. General inquiries: (02) 9273 1414.
